Tattoo Removal Risks

Removal of tattoo is as popular as getting it done and the process of getting and removal of tattoo has existed from almost the same time. But, removal of tattoo involves greater cost, time, pain and even does not guarantee complete removal with many other side effects and scars to follow. While getting a tattoo done, be sure that tattoos are meant to be permanent.

People often want to remove tattoos that have association with someone or thing (like getting your girlfriends name or the favourite teams name tattooed) they are not either associated with the former passion or the tattoo does not appeal any more. So, be extra sure of getting a tattoo that suites your style and would never stop appealing to you.

Some of the nuisances associated with tattoo removal are:

Involves a very lengthy process

Getting a tattoo generally takes few hours or even few minutes but the removal may take more than a year. There are various processes used for this purpose and the time taken for them varies vastly but they are never very quick. Each type takes several treatments of 10-30 mins done in intervals of 2-10 weeks apart depending on various factors. The long wait and patience may result in partial removal or scarring.

Different side effects for different processes

There are several processes for removing tattoos and the side effects associated with them also vary largely but all of them are unacceptable. You should always consult a doctor before considering any of the methods. The complete removal with no side effects is a situation that you can only expect as none of these processes guarantees that. All the processes may have a common side effect of infections.

Excision - In this process, the tattoo is cut away form the skin and this leaves definite marks on the skin. For larger tattoos, a skin grafting is required where the tattooed area and the grafted area both leave scars.

Dermabrasion - This process involves rubbing of the skin for the removal of the tattoo. The process is painful and sometimes bleeding occurs. Sometimes the skin is made to freeze before sanding that prevents the skin from bleeding but reddening definitely occurs. These processes are sure to leave scars on the skin.

Laser treatment - The best among other methods, it involves lesser risk and is more effective but still have the risk of Hyper-pigmentation, where the skin gets darker and hypo-pigmentation, where the skin gets lighter. The effect that it does to your pockets is also quite significant. Most people avoid it due to the costs involved in the treatment.

Finding a professional

With the removal of tattoo becoming so common, more and more people are setting up such businesses. The right kind of professional is needed to carry on the job smoothly. The laser treatment, which is otherwise a very safe way of removal, may prove to be very harmful if not done by an experienced person. Only an experienced person can recommend you the exact kind of treatment that you should need. You should also consult the doctor before going for it.

Other complications that may occur

Like body piercing, tattooing is also a form of art that you get done to enhance the beauty or any other reason. However, unlike piercing, tattooing is hard to remove. The process of removal is far more complicated and involves instruments that cannot be sterilized. That means you may share it with any other person and increase the risk of getting contaminated diseases like tetanus, HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis A and B and tuberculosis that the other person may bear.
